American robin in the redwood tree

My first sighting of an American robin in our garden!

While observing bees in the ceanothus, I heard a distinctly different bird call in the garden. Looking up I saw this bird quietly sitting on a redwood branch. At first I only saw its back feathers (see photo below), and couldn't see its head. But as I slowly walked around the tree, I saw the distinctive orange chest, yellow beak and black and feather pattern on its head.

The bird sat there a long time, at least for 20 minutes. At first I thought the bird built a nest there and was sitting on it.

I later checked with the merlin bird ID app from Cornell Lab http://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/

and the very first bird image that came up after I clicked on the bird size and main color (orange) looked exactly like this one, an American robin!
