First Orange California Poppy of the Year!

Here is our first Orange California Poppy Eschscholzia californica of the year blooming in our native plant garden.

It is a result of reseeding of the Orange California Poppy plants in the poppy patch.

I strew the seeds in the garden late last Spring and the poppies thrived, attracting many kinds of bees.

Because I deadheaded the poppies throughout the season, especially late in the fall, the plants lasted throughout the winter. And once they got some winter rain, the patches became very lush and green.

Last year I also planted Orange Chiffon, Alba White, Rose Chiffon and Thai Red Silk poppies.

It will be interesting to see if they also reseeded.
